Because kimonos did not have pockets, men wore all sorts of personal items on a silken cord that was looped through the back of their belt. To prevent the cord slipping behind the belt, a – usually artfully carved – netsuke was knotted onto the end.
The cat beckons the Japanese way by moving its fingers up and down, palm forward. Several historic tales relate that an important person was saved from an ambush by a beckoning cat. The cats bring luck and wisdom.
